Creating a cooperative board game

Lecturer(s)

Balázs Nagy economist, board game developer

Course description

The course was related to the creation of a new community board game focusing on the research of the 2019/2020 academic year.

Its goal was to develop the mechanics of the game. At the beginning of the 15-hour course, we provided the developer with the professional content (local history data of Orfű and its surroundings) collected as a result of the processing of the literature and the fieldwork during the previous semester. Using these, a set of rules was created upon the developer's suggestions, which is in line with the main goal of the game, namely the development of cooperation and problem-solving skills, but it also takes into account the local history of Orfű and its surroundings and the specifics of the given eras. This was followed by piloting the game. The piloting was based on a trial version of a game developed jointly with the developer. During the tests, four persons participated in the game, the others were observers. Our main task each time was to reconcile the mechanics of the game with the professional content, to consider the complexity of the game. The trial of the game was followed each time by a discussion of the experiences, which resulted in major or minor changes in the mechanics of the game.

Students were able to join the 15-hour course online through the ZOOM interface.
